Huitfeldt at Nordic-Baltic meeting in Tallinn

European security policy, relations with Russia, the fight against ISIL and the Syrian conflict were key topics during the spring meeting of the leaders of Nordic and Baltic parliamentary foreign affairs committees.

Anniken Huitfeldt (Labour Party), chair of the Storting’s Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, attended the biannual meeting of foreign affairs committee leaders for the eight Nordic and Baltic countries. The meeting took place at the Parliament of Estonia, in Tallinn, on 25 April.

Once again the parliamentarians discussed the situation in Europe resulting from Russia’s actions in Ukraine in violation of international law. The EU’s restrictive measures against Russia remain firmly in place, and the Minsk agreements must be fulfilled.

“It is very useful to discuss the relationship to Russia with close neighbours and allies,” says Anniken Huitfeldt. “We always have productive and open discussions in the Nordic-Baltic circle. And we are all concerned about a more tense security situation in Europe.”

She added: “It is important to be clear and predictable towards Russia. I also believe it is in Norwegian and Russian interests alike that we have dialogue and cooperation in the north. There are many clear examples showing that cooperation works well, and that it’s something we should continue with.”

The war in Syria was also discussed. The fight against ISIL was highlighted, and each country’s contribution to combatting the terrorist organisation was considered.

“It is my hope that the negotiations for a peaceful solution in Syria succeed,” says Huitfeldt. “The fight against ISIL must be won, and I think it is right for Norway to contribute militarily to the international coalition.”

The group also discussed the development of the EU’s global strategy, which is to be adopted before summer. Preparations for the NATO summit meeting in Warsaw were discussed as well.
