Outdoor jubilee party and open day in the Storting on 9th May

The Storting building will be celebrating its 150th anniversary on Monday 9th May 2016. To commemorate this there will be a jubilee party in Eidvolls plass for school children who have been specially invited for the occasion. In the afternoon, the Storting – the home of Norwegian democracy – will open its doors to the general public.

Open house in the Storting from 16.00 to 20.00

The Storting will be opening its doors to the public between 16.00 and 20.00 on Monday 9th May. We are giving everyone interested the unique opportunity to experience Norway’s home of democracy first-hand. Adults and children alike are invited to visit Norway’s most important building.

Get to know the Storting by wandering around the building’s historical rooms and chambers on your own. You’ll be able to visit the Storting Chamber, the Lagting Chamber, the Eidsvoll Gallery, the Central Hall and the Staircase Hall.

In the Historical Hall, the Storting’s jubilee exhibition will give you the chance to get an idea of what the original building looked like in 1866, and how it has changed in step with political developments in Norway. Feel free to ask us if there’s anything you’d like to know. The Storting’s tour guides will be on hand to tell you about the history of the building and what happens in the Storting.

Children are invited to take part in fun activities in the Central Hall. We’ll be colouring, drawing and making Lego.

  • Opening hours: 16.00 – 20.00
  • Entry from Løvebakken (the main entrance)
  • Free of charge
  • All visitors are required to pass through our security scanners

Outdoor jubilee party from 11.00 to 14.00

At lunchtime on 9th May, before the open house starts, the Storting will be arranging an outdoor jubilee party for specially invited 5th form schoolchildren. Today’s youngsters are tomorrow’s flagbearers of democracy. This is why these children will be the Storting’s guests of honour during the jubilee festivities in Eidsvolls plass. Monday’s event had so many classes wanting to take part that the Storting has had to draw lots, but all members of the public who’d like to watch the activities are welcome to come along.

Several hundred schoolchildren, the Prime Minister, TV’s Erik Solbakken, the Kampen Janitsjarorkester Symphonic Band, dance troupes, a fancy dress parade and many more will take part when we celebrate the Storting building’s 150th anniversary on Monday 9th May.

Anyone who’d like to watch proceedings in Eidsvolls plass or one of the two stage shows (11.00–11.25 and 13.40–14.00) is welcome to join the jubilee party on 9th May. Why not drop by our information tent and take a picture of yourself as President of the Storting from the well-known painting Eidsvold 2014? And if you’re interested, you’ll be able to see the original painting later on by visiting the Storting Chamber during the evening’s open house.

Stage show at 13.40: Join us to sing happy birthday to the Storting building!

As well as the programme of events on stage, the schoolchildren will be able to build a Lego model of the Storting, make a speech at Speakers´ Corner, try out their hands as cartoonists, play around with the Storting building on Minecraft, and take part in special guided tours. The day’s activities are all designed to tell the story of the Storting building and what happens inside.

The Storting would especially like to encourage as many people as possible to be present at the closing stage show at 13.40.

Sing happy birthday to the Storting building alongside hundreds of schoolchildren, Erik Solbakken, the Kampen Janitsjarorkester Symphonic Band and many, many others.  Join us in Eidsvolls plass at 13.40.
