Liberation and Veterans Day speeches on 8th May

Masud Gharahkhani, President of the Storting, and Ine Eriksen Søreide, Chair of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, gave speeches to mark Liberation and Veterans Day on 8th May 2025.

In his address, the President of the Storting honoured those who fought and gave their lives for Norwegian freedom during World War Two. He also reminded all present about the importance of preserving and defending democratic values. Drawing parallels between the past and present, Mr Gharahkhani stressed that the fight for liberty and democracy is as relevant now as it has ever been, not least in these globally challenging times.

“In 1945, we won peace. But we mustn’t believe that it was won once and for all,” said Mr Gharahkhani.

Ine Eriksen Søreide, Chair of the Storting’s Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, honoured those who fought and gave their lives for Norway’s freedom, including wartime sailors, members of the resistance, and those who enlisted in the service of Norway and its Allies. She also drew parallels with today’s situation, underlining Norway’s support for Ukraine’s fight to defend itself against Russia’s war of aggression.

“On Liberation and Veterans Day, we must honour all those who have served in uniform for Norway since World War II, and remember all those whose heroic efforts mean that we can celebrate 80 years of Norwegian liberty,” said Ms Eriksen Søreide.
