“Canada and Norway are proud to share democratic values, have long historical ties, and are close allies. In these unsettled times, our relationship is growing ever more important. As Arctic coastal states, we recognize the need for closer collaboration in the north, especially within security policy. I’m hugely looking forward to discussing these matters with my Canadian colleague,” Mr Gharahkhani said.
The Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons will be accompanied by a delegation of three other Members of Parliament (MPs) during the three-day visit.
Mr Scarpaleggia and his delegation will open their Norwegian visit with a meeting in the President of the Storting’s office on Wednesday 4th March. Later the same day, discussions with Sandra Márjá West, Speaker of the Sámi Parliament Plenary, are on the agenda.
On Thursday 5th March, Mr Scarpaleggia will be given an audience at the Royal Palace, while the delegation will meet First Vice President of the Storting Morten Wold and members of the delegations for Arctic Parliamentary Cooperation and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Later in the day, there will be a meeting with members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence.
During his visit to Norway, the Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons will also meet Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide.
