This year’s recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, María Corina Machado, met with the President of the Storting, Masud Gharahkhani, and members of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee during her visit to the Storting on 11 December.
“As President of the Storting, it has been an honour and a pleasure for me to meet this year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, María Corina Machado, here in the heart of Norway’s democracy. Her tireless efforts to promote democratic rights for the people of Venezuela have been recognised with the highest distinction – the Nobel Peace Prize.
The announcement from the Norwegian Nobel Committee highlights Machado’s long-term commitment to democracy. It also honours her remarkable mobilisation of civil society and volunteers who worked to secure open and transparent elections, despite significant personal risk,” said President of the Storting Masud Gharahkhani in connection with the visit.

After meeting the President of the Storting, Machado met members of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee.
“It was deeply moving to meet the Peace Prize laureate, who has risked her life both for the future of democracy in Venezuela and to come to Norway to receive the prize. María Corina Machado is an important reminder to us all that democracy unfortunately comes at a high price in many countries around the world, particularly where democratic movements must stand up to authoritarian regimes.
We all hope that this prize will help ensure that the dictatorship in Venezuela gives way to the will of the people,” said the Chair of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, Ine Eriksen Søreide.
