    A century of female representation

    In 2021, we are celebrating the fact that it is 100 years since Karen Platou (Conservative Party) was the first woman to be elected to the Storting as a regular MP. Platou’s election was a milestone for Norwegian democracy.

    Anna Rogstad – the first woman in the Storting

    The first woman to take her seat in the Storting was Anna Georgine Rogstad (1854–1938). She was an active advocate of women’s rights, and was personally involved in pushing forward the changes that gave her the opportunity to run for election in 1909.

    Women in positions of power

    The story of female representation in the Storting is about small steps on the road to major change. At the 2021 parliamentary election, 76 women were elected to the Storting. This equates to almost 45% of the total, a historic high in this country.
