Election of a new Presidium

The 2017 – 2021 parliamentary term was formally brought to a close on Thursday 30th September. One consequence of this was that the term of last session’s Presidium of the Storting (comprising a President and five Vice Presidents) also ended.

This means that from Friday 1st October until the newly elected Storting is formally constituted at 1pm. on Saturday 9th October, the Storting does not have a Presidium.

Section 1 of the Storting’s Rules of Procedure ("Constitution after a general election") states that "When the Storting assembles after a general election, the post of President shall on request be temporarily assumed by the President of the previous Storting."

The Rules of Procedure stipulate that the previous Storting’s President will be asked to preside during the newly-elected Storting’s sittings until a new President has been elected. It is essential that the Storting has a President in place when a new Parliament starts its work.

Last term’s President of the Storting, Tone Wilhelmsen Trøen, presided over the new Storting’s constituent sitting on 1st October, and will do so again during the sittings to consider the Credentials Committees’ recommendation on 8th October and to elect the new President of the Storting on 9th October.
