Round Table discussions between the Nordic Council and Parliamentarians from the Federal Chambers of Russia and the Parliamentary Assembly of North-West Russia in Bergen, Norway 25-27 May 2010

Welcoming the close cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Nordic countries,

Discussing closer co-operation between Russia and the Nordic Council on environmentally friendly energy production and environment control, agree to continue the discussions, including the promotion of energy efficiency in our countries

Expressing their concern for the climate changes that will influence the living conditions for people in different areas of the World, not least in the North,

Noting that global warming will lead to melting of the sea ice and opening of the Arctic Ocean, which is also likely to lead to more maritime traffic and off shore activities in that area,

Recalling the decisions of the governments of the Russian Federation and the Nordic governments that CO2-emissions should be reduced considerably in the years to come,

Call for international cooperation on the development of new and clean energy production technologies, in particular energy efficiency, exchange of best practices on infrastructural energy and transport processes,

Call for cooperation e. g. between the governments of the Russian Federation and the Nordic countries on the establishment of safe environmental control of shipping and off shore activities in the vulnerable Arctic environment

Calling for continued close co-operation between Nordic and Russian politicians at regional as well as central levels,

Recalling the meeting in June 2009 in Khanty-Mansyisk between elected members of the parliament of the Russian Federation and the Nordic Council gathered to discuss issues related to the promotion of cooperation in environmental protection,

Underline the importance of co-operation between the various forums involved in multilateral partnerships in the north of Europe, like the Arctic Council, the Barents EuroArctic Council, the Council of Baltic Sea States and the EU's Northern Dimension,

Acknowledging the importance of direct contacts between the Nordic Council and the Parliamentary Association of Northwest Russia (PANWR),

Reaffirming the importance of the programme of parliamentary exchange between the Nordic Council and Russia,

Noting the successful Second Forum of young politicians from the Nordic countries and North-West Russia that took place in Kirkenes, Norway, 22-24 March 2010, and welcome the invitation to organize the third forum in Arkhangelsk in 2011,

Taking into account the Conference statement from the Second Forum for young politicians in Kirkenes 22-24 March 2010,

Welcoming the invitation from the Russian side to host the next roundtable between the Nordic Council and the Russian Federation in 2011.
